Bucks Cup Match Report - Drifters 26 Nov 06
Marlow U.14's produced a first rate display to thrash Drifters in the pouring rain yesterday. To give you an idea of how bad the conditions were, nearly all of the boys actually went in the shower after the game! Yes, it was that wet & muddy. However, despite the conditions, I am very pleased to report that the team played excellent rugby to record a 58-0 win. In fact, we believe the referee actually lost count of the score - our rough maths made the score more like 69-0 (11 tries plus 7 conversions). Not a bad effort given that the match was ended 10 minutes early by the referee.
The nature of the performance was the most pleasing thing. After a competitve (and scoreless) first 10 minutes the Marlow boys adapted well to the conditions and maintained a high skill level throughout. Games like this one (in fact, most games in general) are won by the forwards. The team that can win and retain most possession of the ball is likely to prevail - and so it proved. The Marlow forwards used all their power & aggression to drive through the Drifters forwards time after time, with superb support play and rucking of the ball on the ground. The first example was when big Tom Carroll burst out of a maul with the ball and ran half the length of the field to score under the posts. For the rest of the game all of the forwards took it in turn to make an impact and carry the ball forwards. Every one of them should be proud of their performance.
The forward platform meant that the backs could enjoy themselves. The half backs played an intelligent game, which involved kicking the ball more than normal, and the ball handling was very impressive despite the wet ball. The result was that Zack scored 4 tries from the left wing and Connor scored 1 on the other.
A very satisfying win which takes us into the last 4 of the Bucks Cup. As an aside, we were told that Driters have recently beaten both High Wycombe & Aylesbury. The semi-final of the Cup is to be held on 4th February (please put it in your diary). Not sure yet who the opposition will be.
